Disclaimer – Spoiler Alert!

I will try not to spoil anything on this main page, but be warned. This website is intended to point out events or themes within a movie which I find are stupid. I cite specific scenes, and dialogue from the movies I discuss. The very nature of this excercise spoils events of the movie. As such, this blog functions less as a preventative measure in avoidance of such movies, but as a mental excercise after having viewed them.

Shyamalan – Triple Threat of Stupidity

Posted in: Stupidity by Bebarce on December 16, 2008

Pretty soon, M. Night Shyamalan’s movies will no longer be a candidate for me to talk about on Movie Stupidity.   There is a certain genre of film that (probably knowingly) contains a high level of stupidity, and that becomes the expectations of the movies themselves.  You don’t watch “Cabin Fever” thinking you’re going to get an intense psychological drama.  You’re expecting campy gore, with horrible dialogue, and scenes so ridiculous that the stupidity has to be purposeful.

Shyamalan’s work is pretty much at that point.  You can  assume that when you go to his movie, there is going to be a high degree of stupidity to face.   Unless he comes out with something new, I’m only going to discuss three movies of his.  The very foundation of Signs, Unbreakable, and The Happening, could each be shattered by a simple questions from the start of the movie.

The Ruins – Little Pyramid of Horrors

Posted in: Stupidity by Bebarce on December 12, 2008

Horror movies are on average a wealth of stupidity.  Finding a horror movie in which the actions of the actors placed in situations of fear and danger, where they aren’t acting like complete morons is a truely rare thing.  The expectation of this however, has gotten to the point where it is just understood and expected before entering the theatre.  You enjoy the movie while watching it, and just go on your merry way.  The truely scarey movies, the ones that actually have a possibility of exciting that part of your imagination. The ones that cause you decide that it’d be a better idea to wait until morning before throwing out the garbage.  Those movies are the ones in which you realize nothing that the character could have done would have changed his fate.  Ones that strive to have less stupidity.  The ruins was not one of those movies.  This was just purely dumb.

The Ruins

The Ruins actually doesn't describe the local, but the actor's performances in the film.

Terminator – Doomed to Repeat It

Posted in: Stupidity by Bebarce on December 10, 2008

Time travel is a bitch my friends.   And while there is a very special place in my heart for the subsection of Sci-Fi that involves time travel, I can’t disregard the common stupidity thread that links many of them.   The problem increases when Hollywood turns a successful movie into franchise that they draw out endlessly.

Here is something I find myself doing all the time.  I try to fill in all the holes that are left in a movie when they are not expressed in the movie.  That way i can bridge these holes with my own imagination and fix the stupidity.  But when you make sequal after sequel it reduces the effectiveness.  With a fourth movie on it’s way we still don’t have answers to the obvious stupidity of the first 3, and the producers are too busy beating a dead terminator to care.

Give me your clothes, your boots, and your ability to disregard major plot points.

Twilight – A Study in Reverse Psychology

Posted in: Stupidity by Bebarce on December 2, 2008

Twilight is love story between a Male Vampire, and a Female Human. A relationship, that has obviously never been considered in prior vampire movies. Or at least that is what the trailer would suggest. In all honesty, yes the story is nothing new, but I’d say overall the movie was in fact quite tolerable. It kept the whole vampirism thing going enough for me to not be too bored by the mundane love story, while the focus on the love story kept the vampiric part of the movie from becoming just another campy pseudo-horror flick. Twilight is to Vampire Lore, as Smallville is to Superman Lore. You may hate that or love it, but for me (much like with Smallville) its just kinda entertaining to watch.

That doesn’t mean it is not without its fair share of stupidity.
